Tech companies often claim their platforms are “neutral,” but research shows that their design choices, like algorithms and data usage, can harm individuals and communities. Instead of taking responsibility for these negative impacts, companies usually blame users. Governments have focused mainly on content moderation, ignoring how monetization strategies (like selling data) can make harmful behaviors worse.

With new challenges ahead, Canada needs a fresh approach to creating safer online spaces. This workshop will discuss how we can regulate online platforms by encouraging responsible design, transparency, and better data practices to promote healthier digital environments.
