The book project Zero Hour traces Germany's post-WWII history and sociopolitical structures by looking at photography's role in reconstructing a nation emptied of symbolism and role models and establishing democracy after 1945. Consisting of family images, press photographs, and newly assembled still lifes, alongside historical transcripts, Zero Hour seeks to understand how a rising national populism again seduces Germany.

Zero Hour by Birthe Piontek is presented by the Goethe-Institut.
