Mala Khanna

Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet (Governance), Privy Council Office

Mala Khanna joined the Privy Council Office on February 12, 2024, as Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet, responsible for the Governance portfolio which includes Democratic Institutions, Machinery of Government and Legislation and House Planning.


Before joining the Privy Council Office, Mala served as Associate Deputy Minister at the Department of Canadian Heritage. Prior to that, she held the positions of Assistant Deputy Minister of the Sub-Saharan Africa Branch at Global Affairs Canada and Assistant Secretary to the Cabinet (Parliamentary Affairs) at the Privy Council Office.


Mala joined Canada’s public service in 2000 at the Department of Justice Canada, where she held positions in the Public Law and Legislative Services Sector and the Public Safety, Defence and Immigration Portfolio.


Mala holds a Bachelor of Arts in History (1995) from the University of Alberta, as well as a Bachelor of Law and a Master of Social Work (2000) from McGill University.


Mala has lived in Ottawa since 2000 and is the mother of two teenage girls.
