DXC24's Agreeing to Disagree in a Democracy Panel Featured in 2024–25 OCAD U President’s Speaker Series Video

Nov 27, 2024

Unpack what's underneath our growing polarization, and how we can converse across differences in this video of DXC24’s "Agreeing to Disagree in a Democracy" panel

OCAD University’s ongoing participation in Toronto's annual DemocracyXChange Summit – alongside co-presenters the Dais at Toronto Metropolitan University and the Open Democracy Project – is one example of how Canada’s oldest and largest art and design university is driving positive impact and creating engaging discussions on current societal issues.

OCAD U has released the second video in the 2024–25 President’s Speaker Series, which aims to showcase compelling, engaging and unique voices on issues that are shaping the present and future of Canadian society, drawn from the dynamic program of DXC24. The series is a continuation of the summit’s important conversations on the role of art and design in protecting democracy.

The Agreeing to Disagree in a Democracy panel was originally recorded on Saturday, April 13, 2024, as part of the fifth annual DemocracyXChange Summit. Moderated by Mala Khanna, Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet (Governance), Privy Council Office, and featuring panelists: Sarita Srivastava, Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Science, OCAD U; François Cusset, Historian of Ideas and Professor of American Studies, University of Paris Nanterre and Laurie Mulvey, Director and Co-Founder of World in Conversation Center for Public Diplomacy.

Democracy doesn’t work if we can’t talk about the different beliefs and priorities we hold. Today, it’s harder for leaders and followers to even listen to the other side respectfully, without getting attacked. Watch the Agreeing to Disagree in a Democracy panellists unpack what’s underneath our growing polarization, and how we can speak and listen across differences.

Stay tuned for the final video in the series – with the next one coming in Winter 2025.

“We hope you enjoy this series recorded at DXC24 and we look forward to seeing you at the next summit in April 2025” — Ana Serrano, President and Vice-Chancellor, OCAD University
