Tiffany Easthom

Executive Director for Nonviolent Peaceforce

Tiffany Easthom is Executive Director for Nonviolent Peaceforce. She is one of the global leaders and innovators in the field of unarmed civilian protection (UCP) protection, a forward leaning methodology that radically centers those most impacted by violence in inclusive approaches to conflict prevention, conflict management and civilian protection. UCP tools can be used to both deter the immediate threat of and/or mitigate the impact of violence and conflict on civilian security and to build infrastructures and systems that engender nonviolent, sustainable approaches to conflict.

She is a senior leader coming from a practitioner background with extensive experience leading teams working in complex crisis situations to prevent threats from being realized, interrupting cycles of violence, protecting civilian space, preventing sexual and gender-based violence, facilitating women’s leadership in peace and security, providing protection in humanitarian emergencies, civilian participation in ceasefire monitoring and direct civilian protection in a wide array of types of conflicts. Tiffany has led programmes in Asia, Africa and the Middle East. In South Sudan, she founded and ran the largest and longest running sustained UCP programme in the world to date. Tiffany, originally from Canada, holds a BA in Justice and an MA in Peacebuilding & Human Security both from Royal Roads University in Victoria, British Columbia.

Tiffany speaks extensively on the practice of UCP, contributing to research, advocating for policy and funding developments in support of unarmed, civilian led approaches to violence reduction. She has been called upon to brief members of the UN General Assembly, UN Security Council, member states, universities and various policy and practitioner fora. Tiffany’s work is featured in the 2015, Canadian made, documentary film, In Pursuit of Peace.

She is now turning her energies into innovating the practice of UCP to address contemporary and future threats to human security, most notably misgoverned tech, the impact of climate change and autonomous weapons.
